Most people know Medusa as the mythological Gorgon with a petrifying gaze. PARADISE LOST has made her the emblem of their fifteenth album, because, beyond the monster, she embodies a deeply philosophical symbolism. Intrigued, Nick Holmes explored the figure of Medusa and was particularly interested in her nihilistic connotations: to look away would be to refuse to face the idea that the universe is meaningless, a thought already advocated by Jack London and familiar in the band's lyrics.
