Side A, "Mi Conga es de Akokán" is built on the Conga de los Hoyos rhythms of Santiago de Cuba. Saxophones and trombones alternate with voices imploring the listener to dance to intensely syncopated percussion, leading to a melodic flight by the masterful trumpeter Reinaldo 'Molote' Melian. The brass returns, and the Orquesta soars to new heights of rhythmic intensity and sophistication. Side B, "La Guajira," is built on a slow country rhythm led by three guitars and percussion, with added brass and strings that provide narcotic harmonies. Pepito tells a sensual story of romance with a local girl, "la guajira," which slowly and intensely builds with mambo, coro, and soneo sounds until all parts lock into a mournful climax.
