From La Reine de Chypre by Halévy (1841), Berlioz wrote: "Its success will at least equal that of La Juive." Wagner added: "It is in La Reine de Chypre that Halévy's new style has manifested itself with the most brilliance and success." Several voices – and not the least – have thus risen to designate this opera, composed six years after La Juive, as a masterpiece. Premiering on December 22, 1841, Halévy's opera prominently featured Rosine Stoltz in the title role as the only woman in the cast, who had been preferred to be isolated due to her incessant disputes with the other singers in the troupe. Next to her shone tenor Gilbert Duprez in the role of Gérard. The narrative takes the audience on a journey from the palaces of Venice to those of Cyprus. Despite great success confirmed by various translations and adaptations made in the wake of its creation (notably Caterina Cornaro by Lachner in 1841, and that of Donizetti in 1843), the work gradually disappeared from European stages.
