Written in Nanaimo, a place that evokes Twin Peaks, *Hard Hearted Woman* was formed from a succession of cold-water swims, long river floats, late-night talks about art and politics with friends, and long drives through the Lillooet countryside to visit her godmother. Cogan recorded with her band and guests from the country and experimental scenes, including David Parry (Loving) at Dream Club in Victoria, as well as at her Nanaimo studio and remotely with Tom Deis. The result is a record that gleams like fabric spun from smoke and sea water: intimate, shimmering, and sculpted with as much wit as grief.
