The Piano Trio No. 1 is an early work, written by the composer when he was just 17 years old, while still a student at the Leningrad Conservatory. Composed of a single movement, this piece is characterized by late-Romantic expressiveness and reflects his search for a personal musical language. The influence of models such as Rachmaninoff and Scriabin persists, but the signature of a unique talent is already discernible. The Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67, was composed during a time of personal and national catastrophes. The finale, with its Jewish and folk inspirations, is not limited to a reference to the massacre of Eastern European Jews, but also symbolizes an ironic and bitter commentary on violence and death. To mark the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich's death on August 9, 2025, the Oliver Schnyder Trio has recorded both piano trios and the Piano Quintet, Op. 57.
