Just Like Any Other Day: Background Music For Your Mundane Activities
Description
With Just Like Any Other Day (어느날): Background Music For Your Mundane Activities, Okkyung Lee delivers an unprecedented, intimate, and radical work, blending ambient, minimalism, and baroque flourishes. Breaking away from her improvised cello explorations, this new release from Shelter Press is intended as background music for daily activities – an enveloping soundscape crafted from keyboards, computers, and cassette recorders, far from her usual virtuoso codes. The result of four years of solitary work, this album marks a significant step in Lee's journey, which began with Yeo-Neun in 2020 and continued with Teum and 나를 (Na-Reul). Composed with a logic of slow maturation, the nine pieces on the album offer a discreet yet immersive listening experience, flirting with memory, internal landscapes, and a form of sonic imagery without a defined anchor. For the first time, Lee completely abandons her preferred instrument, the cello, to venture into a more stripped-down yet no less evocative style of writing. This album questions the very function of experimental music: no longer a field reserved for active listening or demonstration, but an art of the background, a sensitive accompaniment to simple gestures. By setting aside performance in favor of immediate, almost domestic musicality, Okkyung Lee expands the contours of her practice – and offers a new relationship with music: like a second skin, intimate and soft, to be fully inhabited.
