The highly anticipated debut album from Amsterdam-based Indonesian psych-folk collective Nusantara Beat has finally arrived. After building a reputation through captivating live performances and a series of acclaimed singles (Bongo Joe Records), this eponymous record expands an already powerful musical vision. Eleven original tracks delve into the band's Indonesian roots, blending hypnotic folk melodies, vintage Indo-pop, psychedelic grooves, and contemporary textures. The band's name is no accident: "Nusantara" refers to the Indonesian archipelago and symbolizes the unity of cultures, perfectly summarizing the collective's musical approach. Nusantara Beat, born from Amsterdam's music scene, brings together musicians of Indonesian heritage, including bassist Michael Joshua from West Java. The encounter with singer Megan, who was persuaded to sing in Indonesian for the first time, sealed the group's formation. Their first live performance in 2022 and three acclaimed singles reinterpreted 1970s Sundanese pop classics, which already blended traditional music with Western psychedelic or funk influences. Their self-titled album offers eleven original compositions, rooted in tradition but exploring new territories. Javanese and Balinese gamelan percussion, the kecapi, and gongs enrich a musical universe that is both ethereal and modern, while certain tracks like "Bakar" or "Di Pantai" shine with contemporary energy. The lyrics address the complexities of modern love with a bittersweet pop sensibility. Nusantara Beat is a unique collective, where daring and respect for Indonesian folk history blend with elegance and freshness.
