With screamed, distorted vocals soaring above a wall of feedback and pounding percussion, Nohz's debut album plunges into a world as playful as it is menacing. Hailing from Toulouse, the band draws as much from HOAX's hardcore punk as from early 1990s Scandinavian black metal, in the vein of veterans like Darkthrone, at times recalling Raw Moon's approach in 2010. Compared to their 2022 demo, *Slumber Between Rotten Walls* ventures further into experimentation. Layers of chaotic noise intertwine with brutal mid-tempo passages, accentuating the abrasive and unpredictable nature of the record. The result is an intense and unbridled work, designed to shake both physically and mentally. Each listen leaves the listener breathless, with an immediate desire to restart the album and dive back into this sonic storm.
