Symphonies numéros 5 & 7

Description

One of the characteristics of Allan Pettersson's music is the alternation of complex and violently dissonant passages and simple and peaceful melodies. This applies to the two works recorded on this album by the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Christian Lindberg; his Symphonies No. 5 and No. 7.
Created respectively in 1963 and 1968, these two symphonies contributed to Pettersson's prestige during the 60s. The 5th was awarded the music prize by the newspaper Expressen and contributed to Pettersson being selected as the first recipient of a public remuneration for composers, aimed at providing them with a minimum income level throughout their lives.
The premiere of Symphony No. 7 under the direction of Antal Dorati is often described as Pettersson's "revelation." The recording of the work by Dorati with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 earned a Swedish Grammy Award for both, and it remains today Pettersson's most recorded and performed work.
