Before playing a central role in the cultural crossover of 1960s folk music, Norma earned an MA from Claremont College, where she studied classical composers such as Aaron Copland and George Gershwin. Amidst her studies, Norma learned to play acoustic guitar and autoharp. After college, Norma Tanega landed in Greenwich Village in 1963 and actively participated in the coffeehouse scene and early anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. She was noticed by producer and arranger Herb Bernstein, who introduced her to songwriter Bob Crewe. The trio had their first success in 1966 when the song \"Walkin' My Cat Named Dog\" reached number 22 on the American and British charts. The same year, Norma traveled to England where she toured to support her first album, Walkin' My Cat Named Dog. During her stay in London, Norma recorded a second album, Snow Cycles, in 1969, which was never released, and I Don't Think It Will Hurt If You Smile, which was eventually released without much fanfare in 1971. As can be heard on the first half of I'm the Sky, the same whimsical and joyful spirit guided Norma Tanega's three studio albums, providing a colorful stage for her idiosyncratic lyrics and writing. The second part of I'm the Sky opens a rare and intimate window into Tanega's songwriting process with a collection of demos discovered in her Claremont home. More than mere sketches, the demos capture the essence of Tanega's songwriting art, and a tangible translation of the range of emotions that distinguishes her work from the banality of some folk artists of the era. If Norma Tanega is essential to the Californian legacy of folk and experimental music, she is also essential to the folk-rock canon in general. She left behind an exceptional catalog of music, captured in part on I'm the Sky: Studio and Demo Recordings, 1964-1971, but, more than anything, Norma Tanega left a lasting expression of what it means to be free.","brand":"Norma Tanega","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":55304430911832,"sku":null,"price":20250328.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0898\/4943\/0360\/files\/0184923608410.jpg?v=1762359634","url":"https:\/\/vinyles.com\/en\/products\/norma-tanega_im-the-sky-studio-and-demo-recordings-19641971_2025_pia","provider":"Vinyles.com","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
