It is about the swell overflowing from an elite heart, the frantic race of the word hunting the truth of feeling, the vertigo of loving, suddenly drying up and loving again... All of this is called Barbara, and Noëmi Waysfeld unfolds it in a fervent, precise, precious album, somewhere where the voice is troubling because it seems to listen as much as it sings. This singer was discovered exploring, album after album, Yiddish poetry, from songs of prisoners of the Soviet gulag to an unexpected stroll through the heritage of Portuguese fado, then venturing onto the map of tango with the Ensemble Contraste or into Franz Schubert with pianist Guillaume de Chassy. "I never stop questioning something that is very Ashkenazi: the question of an exile or a rift for which music would be a repair, and the only vector of communication with the hearts of other human beings," she summarizes. "Barbara helps me clarify contours that I couldn't clarify before." To approach Barbara's work, she blends inexhaustible classics and rarer songs, without neglecting the sunny repertoire of an author and composer gifted for jubilation and sensuality. For these fifteen songs, she desires a sobriety toward which Fabien Cali and Débora Waldman converge, the Orchestre national Avignon-Provence matching her breath, as does pianist Guillaume de Chassy for two tracks and Maxime Le Forestier, who came to join his voice to hers in La Dame brune.
