Nirvana 'unplugged': those who thought the band's talent lay in a distortion pedal didn't believe it. And yet, here is a splendid album, performed with incredible restraint and finesse by Cobain's band (augmented by a second guitarist and a cellist) whose compositions are here magnified ("About A Girl", "Polly") and who sings with a voice that has never been so beautiful. And then there are the sublime covers, from The Vaselines, Meat Puppets (guests on three tracks) and especially Leadbelly ("Where Did You Sleep Last Night") and Bowie (the exceptional "The Man Who Sold The World"): a fascinating new direction was emerging for Nirvana, in the vein of R.E.M. (of whom Cobain was a fan and whose producer is at the helm here)... Eternal regrets.
