In 1969, the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone, descended on New York’s Philharmonic Hall stage to record her new album, ‘Black Gold’. It became a legendary performance featuring the first recording of the civil rights anthem "To Be Young, Gifted And Black," a song that is "not primarily for white people. Although it does not put you down in any way … it simply ignores you. For my people need all the inspiration and love they can get." ‘Black Gold’ also features a rendition of Sandy Denny’s "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" in a minimalist arrangement that builds to an uplifting orchestration, faithful to both writer and performer. Throughout the performance, Ms. Simone maintains a regal composure, aloof and at times awkward, her monologues between songs bringing the listener a little closer to her emotive performance. Her eclectic style introduces us to different forms of music; past Soul and Gospel and Folk, Jazz and Broadway; her distinctive androgynous timbre oscillates between melancholy and happiness, and yet we always feel that Ms. Simone takes us exactly where she wants us to go. All in all, ‘Black Gold’ is a moving and touching album from the culmination of her performing and recording period not to be overlooked. Available for the 50th anniversary as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on black and gold marbled vinyl.
