Violinist Nils Økland and keyboardist Sigbjørn Apeland, musical partners for over thirty years, have made a specialty of exploring the interface between Norwegian folk music and improvisation. 'Glimmer' is an exceptionally beautiful and moving album that takes as its starting point the folk music of the Haugalandet region in western Norway.
Based on Apeland's collection of vocal pieces from local singers who largely contributed to keeping these traditions alive, the two musicians have formed the core of this album's program, blending in original compositions. These include pieces written for a film dedicated to Lars Hertevig, the great 19th-century Norwegian landscape painter, as well as others inspired by the modernist composer Fartein Valen. Throughout, the blend of Økland's violin sounds and Apeland's harmonium is wonderfully evocative.
