Nik Bärtsch records a new album with his original formation MOBILE, whose lineup overlaps with the current lineup of RONIN, Continuum, their first in a good fifteen years. The acoustic quartet MOBILE, founded in 1997, is the source of Nik Bärtsch's aesthetic and musical attitude. An attitude shaped by his conceptual approach to reduction and repetition, but also by his fascination with Japanese culture. Playing with musical textures drawn from jazz, funk, contemporary music, minimalism, as well as ritual and sacred music, he creates extremely structured new energies. This music draws its energy from the tension between the precision of composition and the self-evading nature of improvisation. From this self-imposed restriction comes freedom. Ecstasy through asceticism, says the artist. The musicians are less concerned with showcasing their individual virtuosity and instead participate in the creation of a strong and energetic common timbre.
