Gramophonie

Description

With "Gramophonie," musician and sampling master Nicolas Repac explores the jazz of the Roaring Twenties, 20 years after his classic Swing Swing! To mark its 20th anniversary, the Nø Førmat! label invited this long-time collaborator to delve back into the simultaneously antiquated and modernist world of 1920s jazz, to add another volume to his series of soundscapes (Black Box, Rhapsodic) by creating a kind of sequel to his 2004 album Swing Swing. Repac uses his samples with virtuosity and poetry, crafting musical confessions in the form of waking dreams. While "Gramophonie" retains the mischievous and surreal spirit, particularly in intoxicating tracks like "Harlem," "Scatastrophes," and "Swingphony," Nicolas Repac doesn't merely rehash the past. The rhythmically intoxicating tracks also blend with piano and hybrid, ethereal, and often cinematic samples. This album offers a poetic and enigmatic musical experience, ideal for fans of electronic music and jazz. "Gramophonie, or the imaginary grand orchestra of a spirited sample."
