"Heart of Night", a split EP co-released by Gar Hole Records (Fayetteville, AR) and Mashed Potato Records, offers two excellent examples of the exciting trajectory of modern American alternative music: the Ozark-induced chirps and clever country styles of Nick Shoulders, and the swampy pop songs and dreamy harmonies of The Lostines. This collaboration is a tribute to the places and people we call home. It's the perfect accompaniment for slow dancing in the depths of a dark, heavy, and humid Arkansas night, or for swinging someone into a vibrant, neon-lit dive in New Orleans. It's also the soundtrack for ruminating on the heart's capacity for simultaneous strength and fragility, on the connections between different modes, homes, and loves.
