Requiescat Record is the new EP by New Brutalism, an American minimalist rock quartet formed in Auburn, Alabama, in 1998. The band consists of vocalist Shane Elliott, guitarist/vocalist Matt Hall, bassist/vocalist David Basford, and drummer Carey Balch. The record features three tracks, "088," "087," and "089" (in accordance with a numerical naming convention established by the band early on), and was recorded in 2021 by Steve Albini and then mastered by Bob Weston in 2025. Named after a bygone architectural movement, New Brutalism originated from a shared musical vision between Matt Hall and Carey Balch, who first met in 1996. For these two visionary musicians, "less is more" became a fundamental concept that would radically define their creative approach. Primarily for aesthetic reasons, and especially from a desire to build, the band plays on self-made aluminum instruments. They chose this material because it is lighter than steel, more uniform than wood, and easy to work with. Above all, it is precise and therefore capable of producing precise music. New Brutalism entered Electrical Audio in August 2021 to record Requiescat Record. Named after a Latin phrase evoking a prayer for the rest of a deceased person, Requiescat Record retroactively became a work dedicated to the memory of Steve Albini. The band admits that a large part of the aesthetics, tastes, and sounds they appreciate stems from his influence and the group of artists who gravitated around him. His passing created an urgent situation. The desire to act intensified and marks the beginning of a new period of productivity for New Brutalism. Broken and kinetic, shaped by the test of time and endowed with remarkable sound quality, Requiescat Record pays homage to the dead while retaining an undeniably living character.
