Its remarkably diverse repertoire spans from the early Middle Ages to the present day, and it has collaborated with the most prestigious Dutch instrumental ensembles, such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, and the Schönberg Ensemble. However, at the heart of the NCC's repertoire lies the little-known body of sacred and secular music by Dutch composers, of which this 1993 album is a masterful example. While the sumptuous Romantic voices of Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921) and Julius Röntgen (1855-1932) were well known, at least to curious listeners, the remarkable originality of Daniel de Lange's (1841-1918) \"Requiem\" was a true surprise. Composed in 1868, the work fell into obscurity until its rediscovery at the end of the last century and its belated publication in 1992. Passages with plainchant accents alternate with polyphonic passages that would not be out of place in a Palestrina mass and stark harmonies that, taken in isolation, could seem drawn from an Ockeghem motet. Yet the whole is perfectly coherent and of poignant intensity in its setting of the text, much like the long-forgotten a cappella Requiem by Herbert Howells.
