From the heights of the Atlas to the dunes of the Sahara, Berber music brings together this composite population of North Africa, scattered over a vast territory. With poetry and sensitivity, the Berbers sing to celebrate a wedding or a birth, to mark the work in the fields, to play with children, to express their love or their sorrow. The selected songs, nursery rhymes, and lullabies here have been collected partly from Berber villages in the Middle Atlas, the southeastern region of Morocco, and Souss, as well as in the Paris region, from performers born in Algeria, mainly in Kabylie. The CD brings together the voices of adults and children recorded in the Moroccan palm groves and mountains, but also professional singers and musicians like Rachid Brahim-Djelloul, Mucat, or Milena Kartowski.
