More than the latter, this opera prefers the tragic to the picturesque and is filled with beautiful arias and duets entrusted here to top talents: Bonisolli, Weikl, Popp. On the French side, Bizet's \"Djamileh,\" an orientalizing opéra-comique created in 1872 in Paris, stands out for its melodic and orchestral writing, with the sunny timbre of Lucia Popp surpassing that of Todorovitch (with the Orchestre d'Ile de France conducted by Jacques Mercier RCA). Another gem of the unjustly overlooked French lyrical repertoire, \"Thérèse\" by Jules Massenet, the most veristic of his operas, is mainly worth it for the sharp conducting of Gerd Albrecht in Rome and the pairing of Agnès Baltsa and Francisco Araiza, sumptuously matched, despite an improbable French diction. Of the seven operas composed by Zdenek Fibich, \"Sarka\" is the most famous. Written from a libretto by the love of his life, Anezka Schulzova, his former student who became his wife, this compelling drama oscillates between a Wagnerian atmosphere and references to Czech culture. Recorded live with the RSO of Vienna, Cambreling relies on a convincing vocal cast. As for Dvorak's last opera, which met with only lukewarm success at its premiere in Prague in 1904 before being permanently withdrawn from the stage, Gerd Albrecht's version recorded at the Rudolfinum in 1995, despite an uneven cast, remains one of the few available discographic references.
