The monumental world premiere of Symphony No. 8, which has just been discussed, took place under his direction on September 12, 1910, in Munich with the current Münchner Philharmoniker, and the orchestra excelled on many occasions. It is therefore not surprising that the Münchner Philharmoniker has staged this repertoire numerous times during their 125th anniversary in 2018\/2019, one of which marks this recording, a concert at the Philharmonie de Paris in February 2019. In the two very contrasting parts of the symphony, both in text and composition, Mahler brings together the setting of the 9th-century Latin Christian hymn for Pentecost \"Veni, creator spiritus\" in conjunction with the closing scene of Goethe's Faust II, creating a syncretism of two different understandings of the world as it is, with the common theme of redemption through love.
