Samples Outta L.A. - Funk

Description

While the late 80s marked the birth and shock of gangsta rap with the crowning of the NWA group, it was above all through his first album that Dr. Dre, with his innovative vision and sophisticated productions, truly launched the G-Funk movement. This laid-back sound, which matches the sunny and cool image of California, can be heard in Leon Haywood's track sampled on the classic "Nuthin but a G Thang." Influenced by groove and P-Funk sounds, many rappers heavily drew from the discography of George Clinton and his two groups Parliament and Funkadelic, three of whose tracks are featured in this selection. The synth/heavy bass formula was also used by DJ Quik and Eazy E with his protégés from the group Above the Law, sampling funk groups such as Brass Construction, One Way, the Bar-Kays, or Fatback. And while the LBC crew, produced and signed by Snoop Dogg, appropriated the formidable "Heartbreaker" by the electronic funk group Zapp, Ice Cube used the beat and funky guitar of leader Roger Troutman on "How to Survive in South Central," before venturing into melody by sampling Gap Band. It's also impossible not to select the Ohio Players with the track "Funky Worm," which serves as the basis for any respectable West Coast anthem. Finally, the symbolic and versatile 2Pac rapped on tracks that sampled titles as varied as a spatial jazz-funk piece by Quincy Jones or an 80s funk classic by Kleer for the remix of "California Love."
