The anniversary edition, the golden age of Shellac

In the context of the celebrations of its 120th anniversary, the Deutsche Grammophon label launched the initiative, in collaboration with Google Arts & Culture, to highlight the very beginning of the phonographic industry: the Shellac era, historically situated between 1897 and the 1930s, a fascinating time of pioneering artists, ambitious producers, clever technicians and engineers, and a true golden age of unprecedented musical innovation. This album presents the most important culturally significant pages from the rediscovered and still unpublished archives: Pietro Mascagni conducting his own works (including the Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana); the baritone Titta Ruffo, rival of Caruso, singing Largo al factotum; the legendary violinist Vása Príhoda performing Dvorák and Elgar; the tenor Julius Patzak in the aria of Ottavio from Don Giovanni; as well as international stars like Louis Armstrong and Lale Andersen delivering some jazz standards. All tracks have been restored from the original "mother" or "father" matrices, digitized and remastered to the highest current standards.
