The Albarika Story (Vol. 1)

Description

Founded in the 1960s by record store owner Seidou Adissa, Albarika Store is one of the most important independent labels in Africa, based in Benin. In October, Acid Jazz releases the label's first compilation, compiled by David Hill and West African music expert Florent Mazzoleni. The compilation explores the post-colonial music scene by highlighting Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo and Melome Clement, as well as Les Sympathics De Porto Novo and Les Volcans. Blending Funk, Soul, and Latin sounds with traditional music, the album includes rare and danceable tracks by Ipa Boogie and Ogassa. Recorded at EMI studios in Lagos, the influence of Afrobeat and Fela Kuti is notable. The double album includes detailed liner notes and artwork from the original LPs.
