Atlantic Records is one of the greatest American popular music labels. From classic R&B singers like Joe Turner, LaVern Baker and the Drifters to soul stars like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett and Solomon Burke, to classic rock artists like the Rolling Stones, Yes, Led Zeppelin and many others, Atlantic has been at the forefront of popular music since its founding in 1948. This is the only aspect of the label's long history that has never been told: The attempt to get rock hits in the late 50s, which began with a failed attempt to sign Elvis.
