The selection presents the raw energy of the 80s and early 90s raï scene with stars like Cheb Zahouani, Chaba Zohra or Abderrahmane Djalti. Mainly distributed on cassette by street vendors in 1980s Algeria, raï spread like wildfire among the country's youth. It became a social phenomenon that even extended beyond the Maghreb, led by the global success of Cheb Khaled. Sweet Rebels offers a glimpse into the electro sound of raï, highlighting a unique cultural moment where creativity and resistance combined to form a true tidal wave. Compiled by DJ Cheb Gero, Sweet Rebels contains cult and sought-after tracks released only on cassette by the Oriental Music Production label during the key period when raï transitioned from a traditional format to the electro funk sound of the 80s.
