Studio Pigalle
Description
Five groups and a legendary studio to document the emergence of a generation. The starting premise was simple: Five groups, one legendary studio, one day each to imagine and record two unreleased tracks, with the aim of documenting a French jazz scene in full renewal. In recent years, several innovative movements have shaken up the world of jazz and won over new followers. They came from Los Angeles, steeped in hip-hop culture (Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, Thundercat), or from London with its afrobeat rhythms (Nubya Garcia, Kokoroko, Ezra Collective), while in France, a new scene was being born, carrying a more dancefloor, more electronic sound—very likely inherited from the French Touch tradition of the 1990s.Historically, each movement has been associated with neighborhoods, clubs where late at night, the young guard was imagining the jazz of tomorrow. The Cotton Club in the late 1920s, Minton's Playhouse in Harlem for Be-Bop, the Black Hawk in San Francisco for West Coast Jazz, Birdland in New York for Hard-Bop, or more recently the Total Refreshment Center, which was the playground for the entire London wave.In Paris too, this new sound is associated with venues, places that allowed all these groups to form, build a repertoire, and shape their aesthetics: Le Baiser Salé for Monsieur Mâlâ, La Gare/Le Gore for Photon, La Pêche in Montreuil for Ishkero, La Petite Halle for Underground Canopy, or Le Duc des Lombards and 38 Riv' for Alex Monfort. Because it is always on stage that this music will continue to evolve.Buy Studio Pigalle at the best price
