KOUTE JAZZ (vinyl)

Description

Jazz and the Antilles share a long history, with traces found as early as the first recordings. From Alexandre Stellio to Jean-Claude Montredon, from Al Lirvat to Marius Cultier, from Jacques Coursil to Mario Canonge, the list is long of those who established a lasting connection between these two closely related worlds. To describe Antillean jazz, in its early days, terms like Caribbean swing or biguine jazz were used, a wave that would arrive in Europe during the interwar period. "Antilleans brought a lot of music in their luggage, but the French then did not realize that the missing link between the United States and France was the Antilles!" recalled poet Roland Brival in 2002, whose cult classic Creole Gypsy had just been reissued. Geographically closer to the United States than to Europe, the Antilles were touched by jazz very early and in different ways. This is why many musicians embraced this music to associate it with the traditional rhythms of their islands: Biguine, Gwo Ka, Tumbélé. This new compilation follows Freedom Jazz France, released in 2013 and already produced with Digger's Diggest. It is the first compilation exploring the vibrant Antillean jazz scene of the 70s and 80s, featuring tracks known only to vinyl collectors, which blend jazz with Antillean rhythms for the best of Creole jazz.
