The career of London-based DJ and producer Steven Julien has always been defined by contrasts. Over a decade of releases on labels such as Eglo and his own Apron Records, as well as sets in clubs around the world, he has consistently blended light and darkness, softness and heaviness, yin and yang. From raw house and techno to laid-back soul and boogie, or meditations on his family and musical heritage with the 2018 LP Bloodline, Julien's music has always oscillated between moods, styles, and emotions. This eclecticism also defines Julien's next installment in !K7's iconic DJ-Kicks mix series. Featuring a wide range of artists including Ryuichi Sakamoto, DaM-FunK, and Todd Edwards, along with a selection of his own exclusive productions, Julien takes us on an imaginary journey from day to night: from a bucolic afternoon in nature to intoxicating domestic vibes before a big night out, and finally the euphoric embrace of the dance floor itself. Julien describes his creative approach to DJing in general, and to this mix in particular, as a way of letting himself be guided by his energy and intuition. It was only upon relistening to the finished session that he realized how often he mixed tracks in key, creating seamless transitions from one moment to the next.
