2014 will mark the anniversary of an important composer: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, whose overwhelming surname should not overshadow the importance of his work, which directly inspired Mozart. For nearly 30 years, he was a harpsichordist at the court of Frederick II of Prussia. He then held the position of Director Musices in Hamburg. Famous among his contemporaries for his music, he is admired by Haydn: "Emmanuel Bach is the father, we are his children," Mozart, with whom he was close, as well as Beethoven, who asked several times the publisher Breitkopf to send him his works. He is the only son of J.S. Bach who succeeded in his career: his music was widely disseminated during his lifetime; he is a wealthy and respected master. His output is extraordinarily abundant: hundreds of oratorios and cantatas; an even greater number of odes and spiritual songs. Among them are lieder that are true romantic lieder before the term existed. For the orchestra, he wrote about twenty symphonies and more than 50 concertos for one or two keyboard instruments. The most original part of his output is probably found in his works for keyboard. This abundant box set masterfully reflects his concertante, symphonic, and keyboard works, featuring artists such as Gustav Leonhardt, Ton Koopman, Philippe Herreweghe, and Anner Bylsma. A rare opportunity for many to discover a splendid repertoire that has been little visited, unjustly!
