Without limits: this is how one could qualify these sonatas by Prokofiev, Weinberg, Bernstein, and Poulenc. This last one aside, these works were all composed during World War II, a context that should not be overlooked given their great virtuosity, each exploring, in its own way, the limits of the genre. While Weinberg draws from klezmer and Bernstein from jazz, Prokofiev, just like Poulenc, relies on classical language, with great freedom. His famous sonata for flute, for which David Oïstrakh had a crush, is presented here in an unpublished transcription for clarinet.
