African Rhythms 1970-1982

Description

Strut presents "African Rhythms 1970-1982", a superb compilation in 2CD and 3LP versions by Oneness Of Juju, led by its iconic leader Plunky J. Branch. The group's early work dates back to 1970 with exiled South African jazzman Ndikho Xaba in San Francisco, the compilation covers the group's journey through the New York loft jazz scene, forming Juju and releasing two iconic albums of striking percussive jazz on Strata-East. "I saw myself as a cultural warrior," explains Plunky. "We studied Africa and tried to infuse our music with an African spirit." "African Rhythms 1970-1982" revisits a compilation released on Strut in 2001. While retaining the African influence but blending its music with funk and R'n'B, this album is considered a true classic of the genre! The album was recently remastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery. Both formats feature a 4-page 12" booklet containing rare photos and a complete interview with Plunky Branch in the liner notes by Chris Menist.
