Mt. Joy

Description

As the band formed in mid-2016 and released a few tracks, they quickly found themselves with over 10 million streams. It was the song "Astrovan" that, despite the lack of any promotion, brought them to light, a song that ironically talks about stagnating in life and wanting the opportunity to pursue one's dream. That opportunity has arrived. The following year was dedicated to live performances, with the band playing alongside The Shins, Whitney, and The Head and the Heart. Their growth was exponential, leading the band to sign with Dualtone Records and record their self-titled debut album with producer Jon Gilbert (The Kills). Rooted in the folk/rock tradition and fueled by the creative and intuitive connection between childhood friends Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar), the plaintive strings of "Younger Days" meditate on the fear of choosing the wrong path and a psyche that is unraveling, while "Sheep," with its raspy voice, serves as a post-Trump salvo on the responsibility to overcome political and social discouragement, and the melancholic "Silver Lining" addresses the damage caused by hard drugs and the cycle of addiction. Nevertheless, this debut album carries an underlying sense of hope as this young band faces the moment when dreams become reality and finds beauty in the exhilarating uncertainty of it all.
