Hawk Deh Near marks the return of MT Gemini with his most intense and uncompromising album to date. The title is inspired by the Jamaican proverb "Chicken merry, hawk deh near," an expression mixing humor and warning, which summarizes the central tension of the album between apparent lightness and an underlying threat. Prioritizing incantation over genre, Hawk Deh Near treats reggae as raw material. Fragments of rhythm, melody, and texture are integrated into hypnotic and abrasive compositions where repetition, saturation, and distorted psychedelia destabilize familiar forms. The result is a music of deconstruction: raw, ritualistic, and with striking emotional immediacy. The album was recorded, produced, and mixed by Yannick Franck using a process deliberately opposed to hyper-controlled digital production. Texture, imperfection, psychoacoustic phenomena, and instability are highlighted, allowing distortion, accidents, and ambiguity to actively shape the music. MT Gemini is Franck's long-standing avant-dub project, fusing Jamaican forms such as ska, rocksteady, and dancehall with unconventional electroacoustic practices. Rather than adopting a revivalist approach, the project operates through mutation and fabulation: forgotten elements of classic rocksteady tracks or popular dancehall hits reappear from new angles, reorganized into dense and ritualistic sound environments.
