The krautrock group Motrik, originally from Portland, formed in 2013. Its four members are united by a desire to modernize their genre of choice. Sharing a passion for pioneers such as Can, Kraftwerk, and Trad Gras Och Stenar, the band has demonstrated its talent through a series of EPs and albums, the most recent of which, Artificial Head, released in 2020, was critically acclaimed. Continuing their experiments by incorporating influences ranging from funk and jazz to psychedelia and prog, Motrik offers us with their third album, a double LP titled MOON: The Cosmic Electrics of MOTRIK, a new chapter in the history of this historic genre, reflected in the album's cosmic cover art. Motrik fully exploits the space offered by the four sides of vinyl on this new opus. The central part of the album features two long suites, characteristic of the band's dynamic live performances, often punctuated by smoke cannons, lasers, and other nods to Kraftwerk and company. The track "Stabilize," lasting 13 minutes, emerges from a haze of synth pulses and guitar sounds, settling into a steady NEU!-like rhythm that swells and recedes like an ecstatic wave. On "Space Elevator," the motorik energy that gives the group its name evolves into an insinuating, sensual disco pulse before a perfect gradual descent in the final minute.
