To celebrate the tenth anniversary of Moon Duo's debut album, 'Escape', long out of print, Sacred Bones Records is offering us a new deluxe version of the album. This new reissue includes the complete original album, plus three other rare tracks from Moon Duo's unbridled beginnings. The band made this record in a San Francisco rehearsal space in late 2009. It was a classic type of rehearsal room, shared by many musicians for months and even years. A windowless room lit by string lights with walls full of poster and flyer remnants. There was a dirty old carpet, messy gear more or less old or abandoned, and the air seemed suspended in a permanent haze of smoke residue and stale beer. Moon Duo recorded on a four-track recorder over a few nights: they would simply start with the rhythms, press record, and let loose! They had a vague feeling of fusion, or fomentation, like a glimpse of something whose outlines were not yet visible, but neither of them knew at the time that this record would mark the beginning of their lives as a touring band and allow them to meet so many friends, loved ones, and collaborators. Ten years is both a lifetime and a blink of an eye, measurable yet impossible to quantify. These four tracks, and the three others that accompany them here, are a fragment of their very first existence: Moon Duo played by instinct, with great freedom of experimentation and overflowing enthusiasm for things to come.
