Just before recording their epic masterpiece, You Are There, in late 2005, MONO began collaborating with fellow Tokyo native and modern electronic composer World's End Girlfriend. The result is a five-part suite of neoclassical grace and art-rock luminescence, originally released in 2006. As dark as the ocean floor, and almost as strange, Palmless Prayer / Mass Murder Refrain allows MONO to inhabit an illuminated world they had only glimpsed in their more orchestral compositions. Recorded in multiple studios in Japan, Palmless Prayer highlights MONO's growing obsession with classical music and World's End Girlfriend's mastery of subtle dynamic shifts. Abandoning their tendency to unleash infernal blasts of speaker-shredding noise, MONO demonstrate remarkable restraint, stretching song lengths to 19 minutes or more, and transforming barely perceptible crescendos into earth-shattering events.
