Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition Marc Fitze, Organ-Celesta The Transcriptions No musical work has inspired as many transcriptions as Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition." From its first posthumous publication in 1886, edited by Rimsky-Korsakov, the work appeared in a revised form. Even the later facsimile editions of the 1874 manuscript did not prevent the contrast between the monumental nature of Mussorgsky's sound visions and the relative simplicity of his pianistic writing from inspiring pianists (Vladimir Horowitz, Arcadi Volodos, among others) to create virtuosic enrichments, and conductors to produce orchestrations with varied colors. Among the many orchestral adaptations – by Mikhail Touchmalov (1889), Henry Wood (1915), Leopold Stokowski (1939), Sergei Gortchakov (1954), or Dmitri Ashkenazy (1982) – Maurice Ravel's version, created in 1922, remains the most significant. It gave Mussorgsky's work international fame and has had a lasting influence on all subsequent orchestral versions. One could thus argue that the original manuscript almost naturally calls for adaptation.
