MJ Lenderman is the project of North Carolina native and Wednesday country/indie band guitarist Jake Lenderman, who released the critically acclaimed I Was Trying To Describe You To Someone in early 2020. His debut record for Dear Life Records is Ghost of Your Guitar Solo, a collection of ten songs recorded and performed entirely by MJ Lenderman and released in 2021. The record was written and recorded quickly, with songs often being fully constructed and recorded over frenetic single-day sessions. The record sounds like country music played by a noisy punk band, sloppy and imperfect like the characters in his songs. Lyrically, Lenderman has broadened his scope beyond solemn introspection, adding humor to scenes larger than his own life. He draws inspiration from authors Harry Crews and Larry Brown, two self-taught Southerners who found a balance between empathy, humor, and darkness. The resulting songs deal with overconsumption and drug and alcohol abuse, are full of self-loathing and pity, while also celebrating the absurdity of the situation.
