Schumann and Berg

Description

Two great artists at the height of their art, soprano Dorothea Röschmann and pianist Mitsuko Uchida, perform the lieder of Schumann and Alban Berg. For the writing of his lieder, Schumann was inspired by Schubert with the arrangement in cycles, such as Love and the Life of a Woman (Frauenliebe und leben) which set to music eight episodes of a woman's life, or The Loves of the Poet, but he assigns a new role to the piano. He also develops the concept of collections of lieder with notably the Liederkreis which describe the universe of the poet Joseph Eichendorff. Schumann's great love for Clara Wieck is at the heart of the Liederkreis, which he describes as "his most romantic music." The Sieben frühe Lieder (Seven early lieder) were composed by Alban Berg between 1905 and 1908 among a hundred other lieder, while he was studying with Arnold Schönberg. They also evoke Love but through nature and the elements, while maintaining a close connection with Schumann's music. A program recorded live at Wigmore Hall that brings all the delicacy of femininity to the masculine romantic imagination of the lieder.
