Chimet's music traces the progression of hurricanes Ophelia and Brian, which struck the British Isles over a week in 2017, using data from a weather station located in the Solent. In addition to 100-mile-per-hour winds and considerable damage and disruption, the storms brought Saharan desert dust that turned the sky orange over much of the UK. This otherworldly meteorological phenomenon serves as the backdrop for Chimet. The album was created from 2,016 sampled data streams, collected every five minutes, translating seven days of information into 67 minutes and 12 seconds of detailed, evolving music. With nature orchestrating the piece, it is joined by intuitive and powerful improvisations on piano, cello, and synthesizer. The recording captures the sense of anticipation and tension, the drop in atmospheric pressure, the rise of the winds, the intertwining of storm systems, and the serenity of agrometeorology. The changes are continuous, monumental, and open to the elements. Chimet is a record one can get lost in. Like the sea itself, it does not readily yield its secrets. The listening experience seems to change depending on your state of mind, and resonates on a primal level that belies its data-driven compositional approach. For generations, artists and musicians have been drawn to the sea as a source of inspiration. This emotional response to the immensity of the ocean is a powerful force. While Chimet's origins lie in numbers, the resulting record proudly stands in this artistic tradition. Music for gazing at the horizon.
