Miles Davis recorded this album while forming his legendary first quintet. The trumpeter is surrounded by a quartet consisting of the famous bassist Oscar Pettiford, pianist Red Garland, and drummer Philly Joe Jones – both future members of the quintet, alongside John Coltrane on tenor saxophone and Paul Chambers on bass. The repertoire includes four standards, a blues titled “Green Haze,” as well as the original composition “I Didn’t,” Miles’ humorous response to Thelonious Monk’s “Well, You Needn’t.” Two additional tracks from a 1952 Davis session with Pettiford are also included as bonuses.
