Cool was born prematurely. This Miles Davis album was released in 1957. But the music was recorded during three sessions in 1949 and 1950. After playing in Charlie Parker's band, the prolific trumpeter formed his own unusual ensemble in 1948: a mini big band of nine musicians (a "nonet," as it's called in the business), brass-focused, notably featuring a tuba player and a French horn. Over the still-popular be-bop rhythm of the era, the band thus paraded waves of sparkling brass. It’s not a tsunami, but rather a Californian bay where currents intersect and overlap. With Gil Evans on arrangements and musicians of the caliber of Max Roach, Gerry Mulligan, and Lee Konitz, Miles Davis invented a new jazz dandyism, which is at the heart of creation while appearing detached from everything. In a word: cool.
