American tenor saxophonist Mark Turner has been performing with Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug for twelve years, in both quartet and duo settings. Their collaborations include FAROE (2018), an album nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. On this new album, NOCTURNES, Ploug integrates four of his own compositions with interpretations of classical works; primarily by Danish composer Bent Sørensen (b. 1958), one by his compatriot Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), and one by Ukrainian Valentin Silvestrov (b. 1937).
Mikkel Ploug and Bent Sørensen became friends during the preparation and creation process of this album. Sørensen stated that he prefers his music to be “attacked and mishandled” rather than simply "used." He is not concerned that his pieces might be damaged by the interpretation process. Classical music has a long tradition of borrowing and reinterpretation, and Bent Sørensen’s nocturnes are robust enough to withstand this. Mark Turner is an artist on the prestigious ECM label, for which he records both as a leader and sideman. His playing is influenced by Warne Marsh's vocabulary, but Turner is also a brilliant melodist. This is evident on this new album.
