Released in August 1987, this sixth album by Midnight Oil is a powerful concept album, focusing on the struggles of Indigenous Australians and the protection of wildlife and flora—essential themes dear to the band. Inspired by the 1986 Blackfella/Whitefella tour, undertaken with Warumpi Band and Gondwanaland within Australian Indigenous communities, it demonstrates a unique artistic and social commitment. Recognized as a major work, Diesel and Dust made its mark: in 1989, Rolling Stone ranked it thirteenth on its list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s, and in October 2010, it was voted number one in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.
