If there is one quality that best sums up Michel Petrucciani's personality and music, it is generosity. It was on stage, in the moment, in close proximity to the audience, in the warm intimacy allowed by the club, that he most truly expressed his passion for sharing. "Many musicians," he confessed, "play too selfishly. They only play for themselves and a select few. I play to please and communicate. I'd like to think I'm a very happy person. That's why it's crucial for me to convey and give to others this generosity that is essential in art, music, and life." Proof of this are these magnificent moments captured live in 1997 in Tokyo. Accompanied by Anthony Jackson and Steve Gadd, two very close friends with whom he maintained an almost telepathic musical relationship, Michel Petrucciani delivered a burning hour of pianoforte, performing standards and personal compositions to unleash a boundless generosity live, giving free rein to his very sensual sense of lyricism. Once again, we are struck by the sunny clarity of his phrasing, the vigor and very percussive rigor of his touch (this master of tempo played "at the heart of the note"), the amplitude of his long phrases where each note can always be heard very distinctly. Michel put a lot of emphasis and relief into everything he played. But above all, a lot of sincerity. His heart sang immediately on the piano. This album is the most striking demonstration of that.
