L'Orchestre Philharmonique de Dresde, from the capital of Saxony, is made up of the best musicians from this region, formerly East Germany. The culture of music there was traditionally extremely developed and of very high quality, but it was not necessarily well known. The conductor who leads it today is a member of a great family of musicians, including his father Kurt Sanderling, one of the greatest interpreters of the Iron Curtain era. He was notably a specialist in the music of Shostakovich. Three of his sons are now great conductors, including Michael who conducts here and succeeds a long line of very great figures in music: Masur, Janowski, and Frühbeck de Burgos. He has chosen two works that depict the overwhelming presence of political personalities: on one side Beethoven (Eroica Symphony) and on the other Stalin (6th Symphony of Shostakovich) who would pursue Shostakovich with his persecutions practically throughout his career.
