With "Paz en La Tierra," the Meridian Brothers and Conjunto Media Luna set out to explore the essence of Colombian Caribbean music and its traditional formation: Accordion, Guacharaca, Caja, Congas, Electric Bass, and vocals. - - Building on this idea and working on the music for a documentary about the famous singer Diomedes Diaz, Iván Medellín (accordionist for Conjunto Media Luna) and Eblis Álvarez of the Meridian Brothers embarked on a new project. They constructed a sound based exclusively around the traditional Colombian combo and thoroughly explored the accordion melodies present in the Colombian musical imagination. The duo started from the basics: the melodies of 'vallenato', the best known in the country, those of the 'sabanero' music from the lands of Sucre and Córdoba with cumbia leanings, 'bullerengue', 'vallenato' son, among other tunes, nourished the group's ideas. The sounds of Barranquilla deserve a special mention due to its cosmopolitan approach, utilizing all sorts of influences, from Caribbean islands to ancient rhythms or even modern rock and funk, which also served as inspiration for this album. - - In the process, new ways of mixing emerged, and new modes of expression arose. Although the rhythms used on the album are rooted in tradition, the duo modified them, taking them in new directions. While constantly drawing on references from the past to transform their sound, the experimenters created a sonic object that looks toward a parallel future. By using several theatrical situations, alterations in musical structures, and slight distortions of traditional harmonies, the result of Paz en la Tierra is enigmatic, charming, and at the same time directed towards the dance floor to keep the past alive and make the essence of Colombian Caribbean musical tradition thrive.
