The album MEMORY GAME by Meredith Monk is, as its name suggests, a reflection on a pivotal period of her career while also being a very detailed portrait of the intense and captivating way in which singing plays with our expectations. Joining forces with the Vocal Ensemble and the group Bang on a Can All-Stars, Monk explores arrangements never before recorded, taken from her award-winning science fiction opera The Games. She also records reissues of pieces from her previous albums Do You Be (1987) and Impermanence (2008). MEMORY GAME is a collection of pieces united by a common narrative that stems from the composer's desire to revisit the past with an insatiable curiosity. "I first worked with Bang on a Can in the late '90s," Monk tells Downbeat magazine, "In a sense, that marked the beginning of this project. It's great to hear these pieces again from a different angle with the addition of the instrumental part."
